A population of snails is preyed upon by birds that break the snails open on rocks, eat the soft bodies, and leave the shells. The snails occur in both striped and unstriped forms. In one area, researchers counted both live snails and broken shells. Their data are summarized below:

Striped Unstriped Total Percent Striped

Living 264 296 560 47.1

Broken 486 377 863 56.3

Which snail form seems to be better adapted to this environment? Why? Predict how the frequencies of striped and unstriped individuals might change in the future?

One of the key characteristics of arthropods is their jointed appendages. Describe four functions of these appendages in four different arthropods.

How do animals help flowering plants reproduce? What do the animals get in return?

Which snail form seems to be better adapted to this environment? Why? Predict how the frequencies of striped a
Unstriped, because more survive, less are broken. Striped are probably easier for birds to see and catch.

Unstriped percentage will probably rise as striped genes get eaten out of the population.

legs: walking, manipulating food

claws: catching and manipulating food, defense

antennae: sensing the environment

wings: flying

animals are responsible for plant reproduction in two ways

1. Pollination, bringing pollen from plant to plant, animal usually get nectar or some other food in return

2. Seed distribution, this may happen by accident, such as burrs taking a piggy back ride in an animals fur, which is no benefit to the animal. Some seeds need to go throught the digestive system of an animal before being able to germinate, which is usually the result of an animal eating the fruits of the plant, so the animal got nutition in return.
